It's not laziness when you stop trying because you know that you'll be discriminated against no matter what you do.
There are probably people who don't realize that there's no amount of intelligent, hardworking, appropriate or polite that I can be that removes the stigma of my psychiatric history. Most of society doesn't realize that. Actually, the stereotype of intelligence having a correlation to mental illness is turning into a form of discrimination; many, many people have used that stereotype to deny all evidence that I'm not crazy when their thinking that my being crazy has been intrinsic to a conclusion of them being right and me being wrong.
