For the judge to move the case before a jury protects him from being the one person who decides the case.

These are pictures of part of a Guardian article called " 'Jackie' from Rolling Stone UVA article may finally speak at defamation trial" that was published today:

At the page for the article, those paragraphs are separated by an advertisement, which I didn't include.

This is the address for the Guardian article:

Has the Guardian read the June 30, 2016 "Declaration of Sabrina Rubin Erdely in defamation lawsuit against Rolling Stone"?

This is an address for it:

That document has several descriptions of Ms. Erdely's interactions with Jackie and with the University of Virginia about the two other women who were alleged victims of Phi Kappa Psi.  Reading those descriptions impartially would lead anyone to think that they were real people who were real victims.

The judge has reason to fear retaliation, including the loss of his career, if he rules for the defendants.  Fear of rich and powerful people is what has motivated the University of Virginia to lie about rape for decades.  Fear of losing her job is what kept Ms. Eramo from doing everything that she should have had the power to do for rape victims.  Fear of losing their jobs is what has kept police all over the country and all over the world from investigating and prosecuting sexual assaults committed by rich and powerful people and their sons since rape was designated a crime, which it tragically continues not to be in many parts of the world.
