The United States

January 20, 2017

Our character is taking shape.

Year after year and century after century,

We are slowly leaving our youth as a nation.

We are funny, angry, lonely, social,

Skeptical and eternally optimistic.

It's a burden, democracy,

A burden of ideals.

To fail at every ideal

Is a better life than to succeed at greed.

To have disappointment is also to have had hope

To be disappointed again and again,

Is to be stubbornly hopeful.

Scarred, sad and hopeful,

We advance.
