There's nothing permanent about a person's integrity.

It can increase or decrease, according to what the person does.

There's also no guarantee that people who got to be icons of supposed resistance to an oppressive world ever deserved their iconic status.  There is actually reason to question whether the people who are able to endure as icons year after year do so because they don't pose enough of an ideological or tangible challenge to oppressive forces for those forces to try to ruin their lives.
