Some things are too much to ask of a friendship or a romance. Youth is idealized most of the time, because younger people tend to be so much better-looking than older people, and because many older people want to believe that they were nicer as young people than they really were.
No matter how nice you are, there's only so much pressure that a relationship can take. Jackie and Jackie's former friends; what would really be nice is if all of us older adults could deal with everything that's happening in such a way that they'll be able to have lives that aren't permanently scarred.
Time flies when you're fighting tooth and nail. Before you know it, ten years will have passed since the Rolling Stone article was published.
