The article was attacked because Ms. Erdely is a good reporter, because she has consistently written articles advocating for the victims of sexual assault, and because her work has consistently criticized powerful people and institutions.
Imposing much higher standards of scrutiny for some people than others is a form of discrimination, as is having much higher standards of behavior for some people than for others. Simply put, the powerful people can do whatever they want all the time and can also hypocritically attack people who are less powerful whenever they want.
Eventually, someone was going to try to destroy Ms. Erdely's career.
