What if the Russian government gave asylum to Mr. Assad and his family? It's true that Mr. Assad ought to be tried in an international court for his crimes against the Syrian people. It is also true that the Russian government promised to be an ally to Mr. Assad.
Mr. Assad CAN'T BE THE PRESIDENT OF SYRIA. A civilized world can't accept him as the leader of a country. However, there might be less contention about his resignation if he and his family were able to live in Russia as nonvoting residents without political power.
Giving asylum to Mr. Assad and people close to him wouldn't have the moral stature of giving asylum to the people who helped Edward Snowden; my question is if perhaps it's a practical resolution to a diplomatic problem for the Russian government.
